Richard”Ricky” Samuel Mitchell Jr was born in Newark NJ on Sept 4, 1958 at Newark Presbyterian Hospital. He is the 4th of 5 children born to Rev Richard Samuel Mitchell Sr and Dorothy Mae Mitchell. As a young boy he was very busy. Always climbing on things and playing basketball. He was excited about starting school and everyday would come home and teach his little brother what he learned.
Richard was a member of Cornerstone Baptist Church in Newark NJ. At age 7 he was baptized. He was a member of the junior choir, attended Sunday school and was a Jr Deacon.
Richard graduated from Weequahic High School and attended Rutgers University in New Brunswick NJ. Later he attended Brookdale Community College and graduated with an associates degree in computer engineering.
He worked for the state for 35 years starting at Marlboro Psychiatric Hospital until they closed. He retired from DYFS in 2019 as a computer tech. Richard was a fan of computers. In his free time he would fix family computers as well as build computers.
Richard was a fun person. Always making jokes. He enjoyed basketball. He was an exceptional player winning awards in high school. His favorite football team was the Washington Redskins(Commanders). He was also a fan of the San Francisco Giants baseball team, Boston Celtics and Seattle Supersonics(Oklahoma City Thunder) basketball team. He loved to write poems and listen to music. He also loved to play along with the jeopardy contestants and he also loved to watch the cooking channels
Richard transitioned from time to eternity on 1/1/24. He is predeceased by his Grandparents Leon and Issondorn Hooks and sister Cynthia Yvette Mitchell. He is survived by his parents Richard Samuel Mitchell Sr(Eloise) and Dorothy Mae Mitchell. Sisters Doris Jean Harris(Oliver), Patricia Borden, Regina Mitchell, and brothers Lennard Mitchell and Robert Mitchell(Joann), Four nieces Taneisha Horton(Tim) and Vanessa Mitchell-Hancock(Raymond) Rajonae Mitchell, Lauren Mitchell, and two nephews Justin Mitchell(Briana), Josh Mitchell and a host of other family members and friends.
Richard will be greatly missed but we take comfort in 2 Corinthians 5:8 which is to be absent from the body but present with the Lord
