Barbara Mae Flax Ham

"To everything there is a season, a time for every purposeunder the heaven." Barbara Mae Flax Ham was born on November 23, 1943 tothe late Newton Tyler Flax and Dorothy Poole Flax in Red Bank, NJ. She passedaway peacefully to be with the Lord on December 25, 2020. 

"A time to Plant." On June 25, 1967, Barbara united inmarriage with her high school sweetheart Jay Ronald Ham, and from this uniontwo sons were born.  Much love was planted during the 53 years she spentwith her husband, sons, and extended family.  Barbara learned how tocrochet from her mother at a very early age.  She shared her talent bygifting crochet blankets, dolls, dish towels and pot holders to her family andfriends. 

Barbara was educated in the Red Bank Elementary School Systemand graduated from Red Bank High School in 1962.  She attended NewarkState Teachers College earning a Bachelor's Degree in Education in 1966.

Barbara accepted Christ at an early age and was a lifelongmember of St. Thomas Episcopal Church, Red Bank. She was a devoted member ofthe Altar Guild for 41 years serving as its treasurer for 10 years, and directressfor 6 years until she no longer was able to serve.  Barbara also taught Sunday School, and co-chairedthe church fundraiser committee, for several years throughout the years.  She faithfully attended church every weekuntil her health made it too difficult.  In September 2019, Barbara washonored by the Diocese of New Jersey for her commitment and long-standingservice to her faith. 

Barbara was an exceptional educator in the Tinton Falls SchoolSystem where she not only taught 6th grade, but played a vital part in leadinggenerations of students into productive and distinctive lives.  She wasloved by her students and warmly embraced by her peers. In 1982, she wasawarded the honor of Distinguished Teacher of the Year by then Gov. JimFlorio.  After teaching for 32 years, she retired in June 2000. 

Barbara was always willing to help out any member of her familywhen needed. For many years she faithfully helped her sister care for theirfather as his health began to fail; she also assisted her husband's aunt byshopping for her weekly to ensure her grocery needs were met. When she wasn'thelping family, you could find her enjoying a game of bridge or watching herfavorite TV game shows. Barbara was even a contestant on the "Price IsRight" and made it on stage to win a top prize.  

Barbara was a devoted daughter, sister, wife, mother and aunt.She will be fondly remembered for her jokes, funny personality and thebeautiful home she created for her husband and sons. While her physicalpresence will be missed, her memory will forever be etched in the hearts of allwho knew and loved her. 

She is predeceased by her parents, Newton and Dorothy Flax, andher sister, Pamela J. Harper. She leaves to mourn her husband, Jay Ronald HamSr., sons Jay Ham Jr. and Marc Ham, aunt Mary Boynton,  nieces LisaFairfax Sherrill, and Paula Fairfax Brown, great nieces Chelsea Sherrill and CheyenneSherrill, great-great niece Winter Smith, great-great nephew Zane Moultrie, goddaughterMarianne Harrell, and a host of family and friends.  

Barbara’s family would like to acknowledge her caretaker, Gerri Simsfor her devotion to Barbara during her illness.
